Whats the difference - Charm Attachments

We go to a lot of time and effort purchasing the perfect charm, but how much do we really know about how they are attached. If losing a Charm off of your bracelet would dampen your day then carry on reading.

With the exception of Lobster Clasp Charms the majority of charms purchased will come complete with jump ring and split ring.

Whats the Difference???

Jump Rings - are small circular links which are used for soldering charms onto bracelets. Offering the most secure method of attachment, once soldered the charms cannot be moved. Soldering can normally be done by a local jeweller, prices may vary and in some cases cost more than the charm itself.

Split Rings - are miniature versions of a key ring offering the security of a soldered jump ring and relatively easy to attach they are definately the DIY option. However, if the links of your bracelet are over 2mm in thickness it may cause your split ring to stretch open and the attachment will not be as effective.

Non Solder Jump Rings - this method offers the security of a jump ring and the versatility of a split ring. The ring itself is heavy duty and machine cut to create an almost seamless joint. Although it offers durability, should the wearer of the bracelet prefer, a soldered joint is also possible.

Traditions and Charms

Although of late the wearing of Charm Bracelets has become another fashion statement, with their popularity heightened by fashion conscious ladies, the wearing of charms and amulets has actually been around for many hundreds of years.

Thought to have begun with the Ancient Egyptians, such jewellery was valued not only for its beauty, but also for the protection it provided. Amulets believed to be magical symbols were collected from a very early age and upon death, this jewellery would be buried with them to offer protection in the afterlife.

Unfortunately, charms bracelets today do not offer the promise of such protection; however, the tradition and meaning behind each individual charm, still holds huge significance. Each charm is representative of memories or major milestones along lifes journey and each charm bracelet is as unique and individual as its wearer.

With the vast variety of silver charms available to us, we not only have the ability of creating a fashionable piece of jewellery, but being able to create a keepsake that can be passed from generation to generation. The value of such a piece not only lies with its intrinsic value but more importantly its sentimental value.
